Legend Guide for Set 9

Legends are the new mechanic in Set 9, so it’s important to know when and how to use each and every one of them so that you can either master one that fits your playstyle or just know enough to use whichever is best in the current meta.

Some are great for rerolls, some are great for fast 9ing.  Some are good for win streaking and lose streaking, so hopefully this guide will help you choose your legend and also learn how to use them.  Let’s get right into it

Aurelion Sol

He allows you to become high level and play awesome units!  From that description alone you know that you are ready to power level.  Naturally, he is great with Fast 8 or Fast 9 comps and metas.

Let’s take a look at Aurelion’s Augments

Legend Guide for Set 9

As we can see, these mainly give experience and gold.  Let’s think about when to take these.  In metas where 4 and 5 cost units are powerful, these are for sure good.

2-1

Let’s take a look at Stage 2-1, though.  In Stage 2-1, you can take an augment that gives you XP which saves you gold.  Keep in mind, XP is less valuable than gold because gold can buy either XP or Champions and can be used to accrue interest.  Therefore, XP augments should give more XP than gold augments.  You also gain the ability to reach level 10.

First thing’s first–level 10 is a win condition, but you don’t need to win every game. I know that this is anti-fun, but it’s important if you are actually trying to climb. That means that you need to identify which games will actually allow you to reach level 10. Remember hearing the terms “playing for Top 4” vs “1st or 8th?” Well if you are going for level 10, make sure it’s a good game to actually go for 1st. If you are just playing for a Top 4, level 8 or 9 might suffice.

Now let’s compare this to other options you can take. Most augments in TFT are econ (like the ones for Aurelion Sol), power (something that makes your team stronger such as an item or fight effect like Healing Orbs), or trait related. The same augment picking rules apply no matter which Legend you take. When picking your Augment on 2-1, you want to maximize your health, gold, and strength of your team at some later point in the game.

That means that sometimes win streaking augments gives you more value than the econ augments, and sometimes even more gold. For example some games you get very strong starts such as a fully upgraded board with a strong early game item. In these cases, you would benefit greatly by improving the odds of your win streak by taking a power augment such as Item Grab Bag. Obviously this isn’t going to be every game, but you have to always measure each augment against each other based on your current situation.

Pick this augment when you want to lose streak

Pick other augments when you want to win streak or force a specific trait augment

3-2

On 3-2 you can get some XP whether it’s silver, gold, or prismatic. This is great to get level 6 or 7 really quickly. You will want to ideally roll on 3-2 to stabilize a bit if you have pairs or wait until 3-5 for a fast 7 or 4-1/4-2 for a fast 8. Keep in mind that you don’t always need this. If you are missing some key conditions mentioned in the Fundamentals of TFT, then you need to pick one of the augments that gives that. For example if you need critical strike and don’t have an Infinity Edge or Jeweled Gauntlet component, you may need to take Jeweled Lotus instead. If you need anti-heal, take Red Buff. I’m not saying to always do this, but if you don’t need that much money because you are super rich, then taking non-econ augments would help more unless you plan to fast 9 and can hit all the conditions anyways.

Pick this augment when you are power leveling

Pick other augments when you have enough gold and want to fulfill a condition

4-2

This is a pretty easy decision point. If you are going to all in on 4-2 by leveling up to 8, pick the Aurelion Sol Augment. If not, then get one of the augments that fulfills one of the missing conditions that you have.

Pick this augment when you are power leveling

Pick other augments when you have enough gold and want to fulfill a condition

Bard

Bard allows you to gain even more power when you level up! He’s great for playing flexibly because a lot of his augments are random. If you enjoy flexing and fast leveling (but doing it yourself instead of relying on econ augments), then Bard is for you.

Legend Guide for Set 9

Bard will be powerful in metas where teams can support multiple item holders. Normally TFT gives ~6 items at the end of Stage 4. This gives you 3 tank and 3 damage items in most cases (sometimes you have 1 utility item). With Bard, you have extra items to use to equip a secondary tank or damage dealer, so make sure you play comps that support that.

2-1

In Stage 2 you can choose a level up effect giving either a champion at silver or items at gold and prismatic. These play differently yet similarly. Bard is great for what I call delayed winstreak. With the silver and gold augments, you can just econ and lose streak until Stage 3 and then stabilize on 3-2. This is great for comps that like to stabilize at level 6. You can also delay the lose streak even further by waiting until level 7 at 3-5.

Pick this augment when you want to lose streak then stabilize at 3-2. Also good for comps with multiple item holders

Pick other augments when you want to win streak, force a specific trait augment, or full econ

3-2

Stage 3 is pretty flexible. It gives you items and gold (or just items at prismatic). This means it gives you both immediate power and econ. Getting Component Anvils really help when you have a lot of components on your bench. This helps you get more value out of them instead of waiting until the Carousel round. Getting Item Anvils are great when you have your champion’s core item but need more to just buff them up. For example if you have 1 tank, 1 damage, and 1 utility item already, the item anvils are great at filling up your item slots on your main units.

Pick this augment when you need components (for silver and prismatic) or if you just want a generic upgrade to your team since this is a half power half econ augment

Pick other augments when you need to go more all in in a different dynamic such as heavier econ or heavier power or if you are forcing a trait augment

4-2

Stage 4 is pretty similar to Stage 3. It’s a half power half econ augment. The difference now is that it only gives Zeke’s Herald and it doesn’t give much gold. Keep in mind that gold loses power as the game goes on, so gold later in the game is not worth as much as gold in the beginning. Essentially that means that these augments really just give a mediocre item.

Pick this augment when you have a 3 item carry that can use the extra Attack Speed from Zeke’s

Pick other augments when you can fulfill one of the conditions with the augment

Caitlyn

Legend Guide for Set 9

It seems Caitlyn’s Legend mechanic is a more tempo focused one that focuses on immediate strength, whether it be through getting upgraded units early or getting exp.

2-1

Taking this augment at Stage 2, especially at the Gold and Prismatic level, indicates that you want a certain direction early game decided for you and you emphasize playing strongest board.

Pick this augment when you value playing for tempo/winstreak a lot and/or are willing to gamble for immediate direction with the Prismatic version

Pick other augments when you are not confident in sacrificing a combat augment for immediate strength, aka you want something that can help you more as the game goes on.

3-2

Even though the 3-2 Caitlyn augments are not necessarily the most desirable, there are certain niche environments where they are takeable – especially the silver one. Playing down a Prismatic or even a Gold augment for relatively weak jump in EXP is, in most cases, not desirable, but the Silver one has more merit than the others because it is not that detrimental to your combat power.

Pick this augment when other augments don’t really fit, and you have an opportunity to break into the next level while maintaining high econ. It is a “general” augment, but it is a bit on the weaker side in my opinion.

Pick other augments when you have more desirable combat augments tailored to your board, especially at the Prismatic level. The EXP gained seems like a weaker Windfall with less flexible options, so if you could have a stronger augment you should pick it.

4-2

The 4-2 Caitlyn augments kind of suffer from the same problem the 3-2 augments have, which is that they provide no combat power for a utility boost that oftentimes just isn’t worth it. Perhaps the Silver one is relatively OK as well.

Pick this augment when you don’t have other options, or other Silver augments don’t quite fit your board. Issue with the Prismatic version is that oftentimes it is worse than either Think Fast or Golden Ticket, and its place within augments is a bit awkward

Pick other augments when you have a good combat augment or something that offers the same utility but has a greater potential (aka Golden Ticket).

Draven

Legend Guide for Set 9

Draven’s Legend augments, especially the 2-1 ones, are definitely more for fun and are perfect for those who are chasing a loot high! The prospect of getting more gold, item components is something many players just can’t resist.

2-1

After playing Spoils of War multiple times, these augments certainly are very fun to play around and could potentially be very rewarding once you stabilize your board. However, competitively, it may struggle because you are sacrificing a potential combat augment for a relatively low probability of economic gain.

Pick this augment when you have a strong board or a potential for a strong board at 2-1, as we need to kill as many units as possible to increase probability of getting loot – think Get Paid from Set 8!

Pick other augments when you want more of a combat focused augment or you don’t see yourself killing many units early/mid game. If that is the case, there are more suitable options for you, even if they are less fun.

3-2

As with a decent amount of utility Legend augments, it doesn’t seem as if the payout for these augments are worth sacrificing board strength for. However, if the other options are worse, they’re still playable.

Pick this augment when your other options are subpar, and you’re lacking economy. The Prismatic version of this augment is simply a worse Windfall, but it’s still usable!

Pick other augments when you either have better utility augments or combat ones.

4-2

Since Draven’s 4-2 augments are the same as Caitlyn’s, the general guidelines will be copy and pasted here. The 4-2 Draven augments kind of suffer from the same problem the 3-2 augments have, which is that they provide no combat power for a utility boost that oftentimes just isn’t worth it.

Pick other augments when when you have a good combat augment or something that offers the same utility but has a greater potential (aka Golden Ticket).

Ezreal

Legend Guide for Set 9

Ezreal’s Legend at first glance seems a bit underwhelming, but if you are able to complete items at an early pace and push the tempo, it could be very rewarding!

2-1

Ezreal’s 2-1 augments are somewhat reliant on hitting the right components, and if your components are decent you could do well with them.

Pick this augment when your components are awkward and you can’t really complete items with the starting components, Having the potential to make 4 complete items after 5 rounds (if you get the Prismatic version) is very powerful. Even the Silver and Gold options, if you highroll, can give you a 1 to 2 item advantage over the rest of your lobby early game.

Pick other augments when you can have potentially better fitting item augments (for example, Salvage Bin), or you prefer something that gives immediate board strength.

3-2

Though the econ, components and Magnetic Remover certainly have their place depending on your board situation, it does feel relatively underwhelming and there are certainly better options to be had in other augments of similar tiers.

Pick this augment when you are really keen to complete items with leftover components, and are trying to build your economy a bit. It is a simple generic “general” augment.

Pick other augments when you want stronger augments either in the form of utility or combat.

4-2

It does seem that Ezreal’s 4-2 Legend augments are a bit lackluster compared to Cybernetic variants, but if backed up against the wall they are takeable.

Pick this augment when your other options are completely inappropriate

Pick other augments when you are given a more relevant Cybernetic augment or just better combat augments in general.

Lee Sin

Legend Guide for Set 9

Unfortunately, from a competitive standpoint, Lee Sin’s Legend augments are pretty underwhelming. They’re heavily utility based yet the rewards you get from them just don’t seem worth it.

2-1

However, there are certain situations where On a Roll could offer potentially a lot of value in terms of getting upgrades.

Pick this augment when you are playing a reroll comp, or you can get a lot of upgrades early to fully maximize the value of the Silver augment. The Prismatic one seems a bit weak, whereas Trade Sector is very neutral and consistent in terms of strength.

Pick other augments when you feel you want more board strength and/or want to push the tempo! These augments are heavily geared towards rerolling.

3-2

To be honest, all of Lee’s 3-2 Legend augments are pretty bad in comparison to other augments. They just don’t offer enough gold to justify the augment tier.

Pick this augment when you are drunk and misclick!

Pick other augments when you want better economy augments or combat ones.

4-2

Again, Lee’s 4-2 augments suffer from a similar issue that his 3-2 augments suffer from. Not enough gold, but in this instance, it’s also not given quickly enough because you get half of your gold after 4 rounds.

Pick this augment when you are playing for fun and don’t care about optimal augments.

Pick other augments when you want more prominent board impacting augments.

Master Yi

Legend Guide for Set 9

Master Yi’s Legend augments seem pretty balanced in terms of strength and could be relevant to many team comps, since Attack Speed, Damage, Damage Reduction and Mana Regeneration are universally desired stats. If you want a safe, consistent option, Master Yi’s augments could provide that, but they aren’t necessarily the strongest

2-1

There’s not much to say about Yi’s 2-1 augments, it is just Attack Speed with a scaling factor.

Pick this augment when you are undecided on what route you want to go, and since Attack Speed is always useful, perhaps you can look to pick this as a flexible player.

Pick other augments when you have augments that provide a bit more favorable direction/immediate strength.

3-2

Simply put, this augment just gives damage and damage reduction. Whether or not this is good depends on whether you require a specific augment or a big boost in a power spike.

Pick this augment when you want a general augment option that seems pretty neutral and balanced in power. It is a “safe” option.

Pick other augments when you want a higher increase in power or want something more specific for your build.

4-2

Yi’s 4-2 augments seem pretty niche, as movement speed included in a Prismatic augment is peculiar for sure, but in certain scenarios I could see this augment doing relatively well.

Pick this augment when your team is heavily reliant on casting and is relatively short range, as the movement speed is optimized in low range champions.

Pick other augments when you want better general stats like Cybernetic augments, or you just want something more specific to what you’re trying to play!

Ornn

Legend Guide for Set 9

Ornn is always a decent option, getting forge at 2-1 has always been consistently good, it’s actually one of my favorite options because you can almost always pick a decent one, especially in early game. Other good options are Masterful Job and Medium Forge. Honestly most options in Ornn are pickable.

2-1

The best one at 2-1 is the classic Gold augment. The Silver augment may be too delayed. This may also be the case with Living Forge.

Pick this augment when you want strong early game items.

Pick other augments when you want to not rely on item RNG but rather guaranteed combat power.

3-2

Honestly, the best option at 3-2 seems to be Medium Forge because it gives you a completed item and 12 gold, whereas other econ augments give the same amount of gold without the item!

Pick this augment when you have open item spaces and are planning on having multiple carries just in case your ideal Ornn item isn’t available.

Pick other augments when you want more direction.

4-2

It seems the best augment here would be Masterful Job. It gives you a full Ornn item and a regular item. This could be pivotal in improving your board strength, whereas the others seem a bit lackluster in comparison.

Pick this augment when you have remaining item slots, primarily on carries.

Pick other augments when you want something more tailored for your endgame comp.

Pengu

Legend Guide for Set 9

Pengu offers a lot of useful augments, whether it be completed augments or HP healing! Because it is rather diverse, it can definitely be an option for you.

2-1

Tiny Titans and Metabolic Accelerator have been staples of TFT ever since augments have come out. They are reliable and always relevant.

Pick this augment when your early game board is not the greatest, and you going to play for a losestreak/build economy.

Pick other augments when your early game board is strong and you dont need the HP buffer.

3-2

Item Grab Bag is another staple of TFT ever since augments were revealed. However, now the higher tier augments also come with gold, which makes them appealing options

Pick this augment when you lack items and could make use of AD, AP and Tank items so that if you lowroll it won’t be as punishing.

Pick other augments when items are not the issue, but rather economy or combat augments.

4-2

The 4-2 options are also pretty useful, as they give components, spats gold, and even a Champion Duplicator.

Pick this augment when you have remaining components or you need a Spatula to complete an Emblem.

Pick other augments when you want more raw power.

Poro

Legend Guide for Set 9

This is simply no Legend augment! Poro is actually one of the better Legends because a decent chunk of Legends are underwhelming in what have to offer in comparison to regular augments. Opening up a 3rd slot is good for players hoping to look for a pivotal augment or just is looking for stronger options.

Tahm Kench

Legend Guide for Set 9

To be honest, Tahm Kench is amongst the worst Legend to take competitively. His econ heavy augments sound enticing at first, but oftentimes it’s just too little gold for the combat tradeoff.

2-1

These are heavy econ injections with the prospect of building future interest for the Gold and Prismatic versions. While it sounds good, you might be sacrificing too much to get that bread.

Pick this augment when you are a greed lord and you love hoarding money to build for lategame.

Pick other augments when you want more combat in your augments.

3-2

Balanced Budget just sounds like it’s spread out too much, the gold is not a lot and is just underwhelming all around.

Pick this augment when you are a patient greedlord with low standards…?

Pick other augments when you want to increase placement and have augments that affect your board meaningfully!

4-2

It’s just money, but it comes too late. Right amount, wrong time? It’s not you, it’s me?

Pick this augment when you want a lot of money and are waiting to wait for it.

Pick other augments when you don’t need money and need something that actually improves your board.

Twisted Fate

Legend Guide for Set 9

Highly regarded as the best Legend for this current meta, Twisted Fate (TF)’s augments are strong and ideal. Zeke’s Herald is extremely strong for Gunners and Deadeyes, and Pandora’s items will always be useful in acquiring your ideal items.

2-1

All 2-1 variations of Pandora’s is useful. Even though the Prismatic version is a bit riskier, it is still a highly regarded augment. The Silver and Gold options are consistent and will almost always get you the items you need

Pick this augment when you want specific items for a certain comp and are willing to sacrifice a few rounds to get your “perfect” items

Pick other augments when you want upfront power and are looking to streak and push the early game without emphasizing “Best in Slot” items.

4-2

As previously mentioned, the main feature of this augment is the Zeke’s Herald(s) you get. Crucial in AD comps, especially Gunner variations, this Legend ‘s 4-2 augments are extremely favorable right now.

Pick this augment when you’re looking to play any Gunner or Deadeye variation, can work even if you’re playing Azir/Kai’Sa as well.

Pick other augments when you don’t necessarily need Zeke’s Herald as there might be better options out there for whatever comp you’re looking to play!

URF

Legend Guide for Set 9

Urf is pretty consistent, as tomes are always useful. His grab bags are good as well.

2-1

Honestly, because I like living life on the edge, the random Emblem that comes with the Silver augment might be fueling the RNG craving side of me. Ok but seriously tomes are always useful, and if you can tailer 2 tomes and highroll (AKA +2 Void), you can snowball the game to infinity

Pick this augment when you have 1 or 2 specific team comps you want to build and are willing to gamble the tomes to get them. Or just open them without tailoring at all like a madman.

Pick other augments when you want more consistent augments that are reliable.

3-2

All the Grab Bags are decent at 3-2, but it seems the Giant Grab Bag is the big winner here. Look to take it if you can!

Pick this augment when you need gold, components and a Lesser Champ Duplicator

Pick other augments when you have something that could improve your team even more, either in raw power or setting yourself up for the future endgame board.

4-2

4-2 Grab Bags are still fine, but they may be a bit underwhelming compared to other augments that are more useful late game.

Pick this augment when you still need gold and components (and a Spat).

Pick other augments when you lack combat augments and need something that makes your comp more powerful.

Veigar

Legend Guide for Set 9

Veigar’s augment options don’t seem to stand out much. They are neither too strong nor too weak, which although may sound good, may dissuade some from picking him up as their chosen Legend.

2-1

While Jeweled Lotus is almost always useable, the Silver and Gold options are only “meh” in terms of strength, whereas the Prismatic offers a little more oomph to your team.

Pick this augment when you plan on playing multiple carries (unless you get the Silver augment), as it’s best used in this instance.

Pick other augments when you want more powerful early game augments.

3-2

Tiny power does not seem to offer enough stats to be a game changer. It could be useful, yes, but it just lacks the hard hitting impact of other augments

Pick this augment when you need a generic stat boost and are out of other options

Pick other augments when you have something that could improve your team even more, either in raw power or setting yourself up for the future endgame board.

4-2

Ascension is another staple TFT augment. The prismatic version of this is actually very very good, and could justfiy you taking Veigar as your chosen Legend.

Pick this augment when you have good frontline and can stall for your carries to ramp up to Ascension.

Pick other augments when you lack economy, a stable board or frontline in general, or you will have a hard time proccing the Ascension.

Vladimir

Legend Guide for Set 9

Vlad’s augments are all generally useful and make him a good candidate for your personal legend.

2-1

Transfusion used to be very strong in PBE, but after the number nerfs, it is still good but just not an insta pick.

Pick this augment when you want a generic option that makes your team a little beefier.

Pick other augments when you want more direction or something to help you winstreak or build economy more.

3-2

Battle Ready is actually very good, the straight up damage and damage reduction are always useful no matter the circumstances and it seems to be performing well.

Pick this augment when you are playing TFT, because damage and damage reduction applies to all comps!

Pick other augments when you want something more directional/specific towards your comp

Summary

One thing to keep in mind is that even if you choose a Legend, you are never forced to go for the augment it gives you.
